Transforming a Holden Beach Cottage: A Traditional Design Revival

Writer's picture: Greg Shue, AIAGreg Shue, AIA

The owner of the Holden Beach house engaged Shue Design Associates to add square footage and give the house curb appeal. This was accomplished by enlarging the Master Suite and Living Room on the top floor, as well as adding a proper Laundry Room and Bedroom on the lower level. The style of the addition is inspired by the "Cape Dutch" style of architecture, a South African coastal vernacular that is appropriate for the Holden Beach climate. The style features parapet gable walls, traditional windows with muntins, arches, and traditional building materials. The Cape Dutch design aesthetic was carried over into the existing back-of-house exteriors to the extent that the house has a unified architectural expression. The house grew from 1,680 square feet to 2,597 square feet.
